Kids

Kids are finding the internet more and more fun, with huge amounts of fun things for them to do, but as you are probably aware, there are some dangers for them. How do you keep them safe? Here are some basic rules:

a. Computer Location and Orientation.
Do not keep a computer in a childs bedroom. Ensure that the screen can be easily seen by anyone in the area. If you do this, you markedly reduce the risk of your kids looking at inappropriate material or getting into inappropriate conversations with others.

b. Internet Filter Software.
There are several types of software (eg surf control, net nanny and cyber patrol) that prevent access to lots of inappropriate web sites. Don't let the kids set this software up- they can set it up to not restrict them!

c. Anonymity.
Ensure that your kids don't reveal any personal information about themselves or others, especially not their name, address or school. Paedophiles are keen to meet and seduce your son or daughter and keeping anonymous just might save their life.

c. Vigilence.
There is no substitute for you being aware of what your kids are up to... and the more keen your kids are to stop you seeing what they are up to, the more keen you should be to see! If you don't understand the technology, get your kids or their friends to explain it to you.

There is lots of information at the Protect Kids web site, especially in their "Rules of the Road" section.

Remember that there is no such thing as true safety in this life- you just need to manage the risks to levels that you are comfortable with. Be vigilent and be cautious.
