Get a spam-filter. They will reduce the email spam by 80-99%.

"I keep getting adverts pop up as I work"

These are probably grey "net broadcast" messages. They are harmless but also easy to stop with a firewall.

"I keep getting adverts when I use the internet"

Some pop-up adverts are caused by the sites you visit and can be killed by pop-up killer. Others are caused by Advertising Software and Spyware that you have loaded.
